World famous TV Chef Raymond Blanc visited Camel Valley vineyards near Nanstallon to source the wine for his one hour BBC Christmas Special. Raymond wanted to know what specialties the Lindos made at Christmas to go with their award winning sparkling wines and then cooked together with Annie Lindo in her farm house kitchen.

The fabulous spring weather gave the vineyard a wonderful start this year. The warm temperatures brought the vines on early, and the buds began to swell at the beginning of April, transforming the brown sticks into a sea of light green. The lack of rain meant slugs and snails have remained in their hidey-holes, unable to feast on the delicate new shoots.

Japan welcomes top English wines
Bob Lindo of Camel Valley has just returned from a successful trip to Japan to promote his and other leading English wines (Nyetimber, Ridgeview, Bookers and Chapel Down) having been invited over for the 150th British/Japan Trade anniversary Fair in Hankyu Stores, Osaka.
Bob also conducted wine tastings of Camel Valley wines in Tokyo and in some wine bars in Osaka. He reported enthusiastically that the wines were well received and sold well - infact selling out of the original allocation in about 2 days.

Munching through the credit crunch
On wine, tiny bit of good news. There was a big blind tasting of sparkling wines in Italy last month. There are a lot of these competitions, and some of them are fairly meaningless - you often see the result embossed on wine labels: "Medaille d'argent au concours du vin de Clermont-Ferrand, 1967" etc. But the thing about this one is that a British wine came in second place, only just behind Bollinger, one of the greatest names in champagne.

Double gold for Camel Valley in Cornwall tourism awards
Camel Valley became the Cornwall Tourist Board Champions again last night for the third time in four years. In addition, Bob Lindo was stunned and delighted to receive a Gold Award for ‘Outstanding Services to Tourism’. Previous winners include Rick Stein and Tim Smit.
Said Bob: ‘ I’m very grateful to the Cornwall Community for awarding us these terrific honours and to my family and our team at Camel Valley for their fantastic support’.
Camel Valley have only just got over winning a Gold medal in the South West Tourism Awards.

Royal visit for award winning Cornish vineyard
When the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall visited the Duchy on Thursday 10th July, Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall paid a visit to Camel Valley Vineyard.
The idea for the vineyard visit began when Cornishman David Brewer was Lord Mayor of London and arranged a Cornish produce event at Leadenhall Market, which of course the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall attended.
They both showed great interest in the Cornish wines Sam Lindo was showing, and he made everyone laugh when he gave them a leaflet about the vineyard and invited them to visit Camel Valley.

With a smaller than average crop this year, grape picking was finished by early October. Another couple of weeks of winemaking meant harvest was over for another year. The warm and sunny autumn days ripened the grapes to perfection so that they were sweet and juicy and bursting with wonderful flavour. The art of the winemaker is to retain these flavours in the wine, and this is where keeping all the fermentations cool is so essential.

The most frequently asked question this summer has been ‘has the bad weather affected the vineyard?’ The simple answer is Yes and No. The Seyval vines were just starting to flower when the seemingly incessant deluge began at the beginning of July, and have not been able to set many grapes this year, so yes, they’ve suffered. All the other varieties have coped better with the wet weather, and are carrying plenty of grapes. They are starting to ripen nicely with sugar levels rising rapidly, and we should start picking in September.

Outside in the vineyards, we started removing the rabbit guards on the young vines to expose them to air. The rabbits seem to have a sixth sense and immediately started munching away at the unprotected vines, so we had to put them straight back on again. We don’t really know what to do for the best, as the guards provide a nice warm and moist home for slugs and snails which enjoy feasting on young shoots and leaves, but rabbits are probably the worst villains as leaves will regrow, whereas damage to the young vines themselves can really knock them back.

A series of sharp frosts on consecutive nights in November plunged the vines into winter dormancy. The autumn hued leaves seemed to shrivel overnight, and the next strong winds blew them off the vines, enabling us to start winter pruning. I will have finished pruning my five thousand vines by early January, a good month earlier than usual.

The grapes are now safely gathered in and the wines are fermenting away. This harvest has been very challenging, in both the vineyard and the winery. The crop was massive – about four times the usual amount, due to the combination of no late spring frosts followed by a long hot summer - and so we ordered extra new stainless steel tanks early on to accommodate it. By September vineyard owners up and down the country were trying to buy or rent extra tank space to no avail, but by then there was no spare capacity anywhere. It always pays to plan ahead!

August saw an arrival and a departure at the vineyard. At the start of the month we welcomed our new Fendt tractor – double the size of the Kubota and twice as manoeuvrable, and specially designed for vineyard work. Having nearly quadrupled our acreage of vines in the last three years we felt it was time to get a second tractor to cope with the extra work.

Camel Valley Vineyards 2005 Bacchus came out the top English Vineyard in the prestigious Decanter wine awards announced yesterday. They also simultaneously picked up 4 awards (including a Silver medal for their 2003 sparkling Pinot Noir ‘Cornwall’ Brut) in the world’s largest wine competition: the International Wine Challenge (IWC).

The cool dry spring has been surprisingly good for us this year. Late frost is the greatest threat during spring for established vines, and although we all enjoy those lovely warm spring days with clear blue skies, this is exactly the sort of weather pattern where frost arrives in the early hours and kills off emerging buds and leaves.

We finished our winter pruning by the end of February after an unusually cold winter. It was hard going during the short dark days, but there wasn't too much rain to hold us up this year. In addition, broken posts have been replaced in the vineyard and training wires repaired and tightened. In the winery the wines have finished fermenting and some have already been bottled, while others are tasted to work out which wines from which tank should be blended together. Our new leaflet has been designed and printed, and our new website is up and running.
